What Market Turnover Measures
Market turnover is the total LKR value of all shares traded across the CSE during a session. It is a direct measure of investor activity — high turnover means participants are actively buying and selling. Low turnover means fewer transactions, lower conviction, and thinner price discovery. Daily turnover is one of the first figures to check when assessing whether a market move is significant.
Where to Find Turnover Data on Investography
The Market Overview page shows the current session's turnover figure updated in real time during trading hours. The EOD summary panel accessible through the Calendar shows historical daily turnover for any past trading session. This lets you compare today's activity level against the same period last month or last year.
Interpreting Turnover Levels
Check the advance/decline ratio alongside turnover. A high-turnover day where advances dominate significantly is one of the strongest signals of genuine market-wide demand. High turnover with roughly equal advances and declines simply means high activity without directional conviction.
Monthly Turnover Patterns
Review turnover data over the past month using the Calendar's EOD panels to identify whether the market is trending toward higher or lower activity. A market where turnover is steadily declining over several weeks often precedes a period of range-bound price action. An increase in turnover after a quiet period can signal a new trend beginning.
