What breakout_high Detects
The breakout_high alert monitors a stock against its recent trading range. When the stock's price exceeds the upper boundary of that range by a defined margin, the alert fires. This is designed for catching momentum moves as they begin rather than after the stock has already run significantly.
Breakout vs price_above
A price_above alert fires at any static price you specify. A breakout_high alert is dynamic — it references the stock's recent range, not a single level you entered manually. Use breakout_high when you want to be notified of technically significant breaks regardless of the exact price level. Use price_above when you have already identified a specific resistance level and want to monitor that exact level.
Breakout alerts work best on stocks that have been consolidating in a tight range for several sessions. After a period of low volatility, a breakout tends to be more sustained than a breakout from a stock that has been moving erratically.
Confirming a Breakout
When a breakout_high alert fires, check three things before acting: the current session volume relative to the 20-day average, whether the broader market is trending up (reducing the signal-to-noise ratio), and whether there is any news from the stock in the CSE announcements feed. A high-volume breakout with no negative catalyst in a positive market context is the highest confidence setup.
